![]() There certainly is. The Bible's very first words are "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). God doesn't attempt to prove His existence, He merely states it as an established fact. Is there a God? Step outside some evening and gaze into the star-filled sky. Consider the billions of stars, millions of miles away. Consider the other planets, other galaxies. The Bible reminds us: "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." Psalm 19:1 Is there a God? Consider the human body. Psalm 139:14 declares we are "fearfully and wonderfully made." Let's examine one small part of the body, the human eye. Because of its extreme complexity, scientists still don't fully understand how it works. Guess who said: "To suppose that the eye, with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree… The belief that an organ as perfect as the eye could have formed by natural selection is more than enough to stagger anyone."1 Who declared this remarkable truth? None other than the famous evolutionist, Charles Darwin. Even he recognized that an organ as intricate and magnificent as the eye required a Creator. Sir Isaac Newton said, "This most elegant system of suns and planets can only arise from the purpose of an intelligent and mighty Being." Albert Einstein declared, "The harmony of natural law reveals an intelligence of such superiority that compared with it, all the systematic thinking of human beings is utterly insignificant." Yes, there is a God. The evidence is overwhelming. And someday, we will stand before Him: So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Romans 14:12 Will you be ready? By the time you finish this book, your answer can be yes. Just as surely as there is a God, there is also a devil. Ezekiel 28 tells us much about this evil character. He was created by God (v.13) and lived in heaven (v.13). God set him up as an anointed cherub (v.14). He was perfect in beauty (v.12), which led him to become proud (v.17). He rebelled against God (v.15-16), and was evicted from heaven (v.16). Originally called Lucifer, he was banished to earth (v.18), where he became known as Satan: How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! Isaiah 14:12 Satan is now the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4) but someday he will be cast into the flames of hell (Isaiah 14:15), where he will burn for all eternity: And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10 Today, he roams the earth as your unseen spiritual enemy, working to deceive and destroy you: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8 Satan's ultimate goal is to see you thrown into the lake of fire. Right now, he is furious that you are reading this book. He hates the wonderful truths you are learning. Please don't let him stop you from finishing this book. God's holy Word assures us repeatedly that a real place of eternal beauty and splendor called heaven does exist: "…for God is in heaven…" Ecclesiastes 5:2 Heaven's streets are paved with gold (Revelation 21:21), and there, nothing ever wears out (Matthew 6:20). Those who reach this place of everlasting peace and joy will share it with angels (Matthew 18:10) and receive eternal rewards (Matthew 5:12). Best of all, God wants us to live there forever. Jesus said: In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:2-3 Many skeptics claim heaven doesn't exist, but their disbelief does not change reality. During a blizzard one frigid December night, a Minnesota farmer was watching the TV news. When he saw sunbathers basking in 85 degree Hawaiian sunshine, he snickered to his wife, "I don't believe a place that beautiful really exists." Well, Hawaii does exist, whether he believes it or not. So does heaven. Just as surely as there is a place of eternal bliss called heaven, there is a place of everlasting punishment called hell. It's not a popular subject, but you must be aware of it. The Bible tells us about a man who went there: And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. Luke 16:22-24 Our minds cannot comprehend a place this ghastly. Hell is described as an "everlasting fire" (Matthew 25:41), "eternal fire" (Jude 7), and "a furnace of fire" (Matthew 13:42). Revelation 20:10 refers to it as "the lake of fire and brimstone." Those who are doomed there "shall be tormented with fire and brimstone" (Revelation 14:10 ). It is a place of "outer darkness" (Matthew 8:12) and "blackness and darkness" (Jude 13), where inhabitants endure "chains of darkness" (2 Peter 2:4) in a "bottomless pit" (Revelation 20:3). Hell's inhabitants experience "weeping and gnashing (grinding) of teeth" (Matthew 8:12), "everlasting destruction" (2 Thessalonians 1:9), and "…the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever" (Revelation 14:11). Worst of all, hell's population increases every day, yet it is never full (Proverbs 27:20). This gruesome place of eternal torment was prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). Satan knows he will eventually be condemned there (Isaiah 14:15, Revelation 20:10). So will all those who reject God's one and only method for reaching heaven (2 Thessalonians 1:8). Comprehending the never-ending pain of hell is impossible. To get a tiny glimpse, imagine laying your hand on a red-hot stove burner. Though your hand would only touch the flame for a fraction of a second, you would scream out in agony. Now imagine being unable to remove your hand. Even worse, picture your whole body inside the burner, with no way to escape… forever. Though our finite minds cannot grasp the dreadfulness of hell, it's undoubtedly a destination you want to avoid. Thanks to God's mercy, you can. You'll learn how shortly. According to God's infallible Word, yes. This frequently asked question implies that God is somehow unfair because many people end up in hell. He is not. The truth is, God does not arbitrarily send people to hell. They choose to go there. And nobody is more heartbroken over this than God: The Lord is not… willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 God loves you and does not want you in hell: As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked… Ezekiel 33:11 Because God loves us so much, He paid the ultimate price to spare us from hell. He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die a torturous death on the cross so we could escape hell's flames. However, in His perfect love, God also gives us a free will. We can accept or reject His escape hatch from hell. If we reject it and burn, it is our fault, not God's. Imagine an inmate sitting on death row. He is about to be executed when the warden appears at his cell with an official pardon signed by the governor. All this condemned man must do is accept the pardon and he can waltz out of prison a free man. But suppose he rejects the pardon and is executed. Is it the governor's fault? No. He did everything he could, but his offer was rejected. Our eternal destiny is the same. We can accept God's offer, or we can reject it and suffer the consequences. The choice is ours. What could be more fair? Soon, you will have an opportunity to choose heaven as your eternal home. If you stop reading and do nothing, hell is where you will go. Let's allow God's Word to answer this question: "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life…" 1 John 5:13 Consider this. Knowing there is a heaven and a hell, would a God who loves you want you to spend your whole life terrified of ending up in hell? Of course not. Refusing to let you know where you are headed after death would be torture of the cruelest kind. Imagine this hypothetical scenario. A woman visits her doctor after experiencing severe stomach pain. After running several tests, he phones her and says, "I know you and your husband are leaving on a three week vacation tomorrow. I have the test results in my hand and I know what your problem is, but I'm not going to tell you until you return. But I will tell you this: it's either a minor illness, or it's a terminal disease which will cause you to die a slow, agonizing death. Would this woman enjoy her vacation? No way! She would be tormented day and night. She would be consumed with learning her fate. Granted, this illustration is a stretch, but you get the point. For God to write in His Word that some people will burn forever in hell, but refuse to tell us how to avoid those flames would be unbelievably cruel. That's why God's Word says we can have: …an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 1 Peter 1:4 Want to get your reservation in? Keep reading. Although this widespread belief sounds very poetic, it simply isn't Biblical. According to God's Word, there is only one way to heaven. Jesus preached: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6 Referring to Jesus, the Bible declares: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12 Jesus says salvation is through Him alone: I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved… John 10:9 If there were many ways to heaven, then most people would be going there. Look at the shocking words Jesus spoke to the multitudes during His sermon on the mount: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matthew 7:13-14 Notice. Many go to destruction. Few find eternal life. You can be one of the few. It's up to you. Millions hope to earn heaven by doing their best. But the Bible says our best will never be good enough: But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags… Isaiah 64:6 Solomon, the wise man, declares: For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. Ecclesiastes 7:20 The Apostle Paul, who penned much of the New Testament, said of himself: For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing… Romans 7:18 This same Paul said: As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:10 The Bible says good works will never get anybody into heaven: Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight… Romans 3:20 If you believe doing your best will get you to heaven, you will be sorely disappointed. God's Word says millions of well-meaning religious people will burn in hell. Jesus Himself tells us that religious people will stand before Him at judgment, thinking they'll get into heaven because of their good works: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? Matthew 7:22 Can you picture these people? They preached in Jesus' name. They cast out devils in His name. They did wonderful works in His name. So they are shocked to learn they are being rejected from heaven. They cry out in desperation, "But Lord, my religion promised me I would get in. They told me my good works would help." Instead Jesus will look into their eyes and proclaim: I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:22-23 Religious friend, please be warned. According to Jesus Christ, religious people will be sent to hell. Please don't be deceived by a religion. When Jesus walked the earth, He hated religion. His strongest opposition came from religious people. He called the religious leaders "hypocrites," and "blind guides." He said they were "full of extortion and excess" and "full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness." They were "full of hypocrisy and iniquity" and were "the children of them which killed the prophets." Jesus called them "serpents" and a "generation of vipers" (Matthew 23:23-33). After his scathing condemnation, Jesus asked these religious leaders: …how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Matthew 23:33 Did you catch that? These sincere religious leaders were on their way to hell. Many people are sincere, but it takes more than sincerity to reach heaven. You must be sincerely right. Tragically, millions of religious people are sincerely wrong. One night, a nurse gave the wrong medication to a young hospital patient. Before her error could be detected, the patient died. Was the problem a lack of sincerity? No. The patient died because the nurse was wrong, though she sincerely wanted to help him. In his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul said this of well-meaning religious people: Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Romans 10:1-2 They were religious, and very sincere, but they were lost. Millions of men and women will go to hell because they obeyed a religion. If you are trusting a religion to get you into heaven, beware. Jesus says it won't. This sounds logical, doesn't it? From childhood, we are taught, "those who do good get rewarded, while those who do bad get punished." But being good will never get you to heaven. First, according to the Bible, there are no "good people:" They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Romans 3:12 By your standards, you may consider yourself a pretty good person. But by God's standards, you fall far short. When Jesus was being crucified, two criminals hung on crosses beside Him, one on each side. Before He died, Jesus promised one of them, "Today shalt thou be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43). Wait a minute! This guy had committed a crime worthy of the death penalty. Yet Jesus assured him he would go to heaven. Obviously, it wasn't because he was a good man. Shortly, you'll learn why he made it, and how you can too. The worst mistake you can make is doing what feels right in your heart. Millions have missed heaven for this reason. Heed God's warning, "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool…" (Proverbs 28:26). Here's more insight: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9 When making eternal decisions, ignore what you feel in your heart. It will deceive you every time. Instead, believe the only reliable source, God's Holy Bible. This widespread misconception is never found in the Bible. All people are thecreation of God, but only a few are the children of God. While conversing with a group of Jews, Jesus infuriated them by proclaiming: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. John 8:44 While speaking to a sorcerer, the Apostle Paul said: O full of all subtility and all mischief, thou child of the devil… Acts 13:10We are all born as children of the devil, and if you have not done what it takes to become a child of God, then you remain Satan's child. But you can choose to be born into God's family today. Table of Contents Next Previous Footnotes
