Christians Killed by Persecution Increased 60% in 2020

The missions tracking organization, Open Doors, reports that Christians killed by rising persecution increased by 60% in 2020. The greatest offender was Nigeria, with 2200 murdered by radical Islamists. The next two countries were India and China.

Open Doors President David Curry pointed out that, "Most of the Christians killed in 2020 gave up their lives to extremist groups and not governments."

Besides outright murder, general pressure has also intensified against Bible believers. In India it is the Hindu extremists, but the government is often an accomplice by failing to defend the Christians. In China, murder is not their game primarily, but increased bulldozing of churches and jailing of pastors makes clear that they see Christianity as a rising threat to their national religion of socialism/communism.

In chapter four of the book of Acts, the believers in Jerusalem were coming under increasing pressure from the Jews. In their prayer they quoted David: “Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?” This typifies the state of the world today. Godless heathenism is “raging” worldwide, especially in the western world. And to “imagine vain things” is to believe lies.

Today, truth has been thrown out the window and the lies of evolution, atheism, socialism, globalism, man-made climate change, etc., are now dominant in our cultures. And these lies from Satan only lead to destruction as seen in numerous countries of the world who have bought these lies.

But the believers in the book of Acts pledged that they would not be deterred from Christ’s Great Commission: “And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word.”

As we see the cloud of persecution advancing on our horizon, may we pray that same prayer that God will grant us boldness in saturating our communities with the gospel.
