What Happens When You Add to God’s Word?

A thoughtful reader of my book Look What’s Missing asked: 

“You’ve shown what’s been removed from modern Bibles—but what’s been added?” 

Great question. The answer is simple… but the consequences are huge. 

 

✍️ When You Change God’s Words... 

You’re not just updating language. 
You’re doing two dangerous things: 

That’s how doctrines shift—quietly, word by word. 

 

🔎 Case Study: Matthew 7:14 

📖 King James Bible: 

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, 
which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” 

Now compare that to several modern translations: 

📖 New King James, NASB, NLT, NET, and more: 

“Difficult is the way…” 
“Hard is the way…” 
“Full of trouble is the way…” 

See the difference? 
➡️ “Narrow” became “Difficult” or “Hard”—even “Full of trouble.” 
God’s Word was replaced with man’s interpretation. 

 

😟 Why That Matters 

Think about someone searching for salvation. 

Then imagine them reading that the way to eternal life is hard, troubled, or difficult. 

Would that sound like Jesus speaking? 

Let’s compare with Jesus’ own words: 

📖 “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” —Matthew 11:30 
📖 “Suffer the little children to come unto me…” —Mark 10:14 

Jesus made it clear and simple to come to Him—not complicated or crushing. 

Yes, the gate is narrow, but He didn’t say it was hard to enter. 
Changing “narrow” to “difficult” creates a false barrier between the sinner and the Savior. 

 

⚠️ The Bible Warns Us Clearly 

📖 “Every word of God is pure: 
He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. 
Add thou not unto His words, lest He reprove thee, 
and thou be found a liar.” —Proverbs 30:5–6 

When editors add words that God never said, 
they risk turning His truth into man’s opinion—and making themselves liars in the process. 

 

Let’s be people who stick with God’s words, not man’s revisions.
