Watching the Watchtower: Who’s Really in Charge?

By Daniel Rodriguez

Behind the curtain of “Jehovah’s organization” stands a group of uninspired men—the Governing Body—claiming divine direction without divine appointment. It’s time to expose the difference between God’s truth and man-made control.

Man-Made Authority

Since its founding in 1881, the Watchtower organization has been led by men appointed not by God, but by the organization itself. Today, eleven men make up the “Governing Body,” the group that now wields total control over Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses define doctrine, create policies, and govern the lives of millions of followers – the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

According to Watchtower teaching, this Governing Body—not Jesus—is the sole appointed leader of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Watchtower consistently uses the term “organization” such as – Jehovah’s organization, God’s organization, the organization, etc. to inspire a sense of authority. In reality, the language hides a group of men who claim spiritual authority they don’t actually possess.

This organization is structured in such a complex way that, for Jehovah’s Witnesses, disagreeing with the Governing Body is equal to rebelling against Jehovah Himself. Independent thinking apart from Watchtower dogma is strictly forbidden. To question the organization is to question God.

Scripture-based Fraud

The Governing body is believed to be the faithful and wise servant found in Matthew 24:45. Such an interpretation gives the Governing Body unmatched authority and perceived credibility to govern the Witness population. However, there is a big problem with this idea.

The Governing Body openly admits it is not inspired by God. They admit that their authority is not divine—it’s entirely man-made. Since the Governing Body is not inspired of God, it has no real authority to direct the lives of those they claim authority over.

Jehovah’s Witnesses today submit themselves to a group of uninspired men who hide behind the label of “organization.” This is a problem. The Governing Body has never heard from God and the organization is man-made. They use tactics to maintain discipline and order among their followers and devotion to the Governing Body/Jehovah God.

This truth is a powerful tool you can use when talking with Jehovah’s Witnesses. It will challenge their perception of the Governing Body and weaken their confidence in the Watchtower organization. Once that seed takes root, eyes start to open to the deception they have submitted themselves to.

A Gospel Strategy That Works

I’ve spent years using points like this to reach Jehovah’s Witnesses and lead many to Christ. This strategy is so effective, I even wrote it down to help others do the same.

With the help of Winning the Witnesses, countless Christians have seen friends and family leave the organization and embrace the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Readers write to me regularly, sharing stories of transformation sparked by simply following the steps in the book.

Winning the Witnesses will equip you to approach this mission field with a proven strategy. You’ll learn how to expose lies, challenge the source of false beliefs, and clear the way for the gospel to truly take root.

I've also put together a website with resources, tools, testimonials, and Bible study materials focused on sharing the gospel with Jehovah’s Witnesses. The website, winningthewitnesses.org, already contains a wealth of resources and I'm adding to it all the time.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are fueled by devotion to the Governing Body to share their truth. Chances are, you’ll meet one in a mall or when they come knocking in your neighborhood. With a copy of Winning the Witnesses in hand, you can lodge some doubt in their mind leaving them open to receiving the gospel.
