Western Society is Going Nowhere (Fast)

The legalization of assisted suicide, the normalization of abortion, and the rise of controversial family structures are shaking the foundations of our nation. However, these shifts signal a greater crisis: an erosion of moral integrity that demands a biblical response.

Britain Legalizes Assisted Suicide

The British Parliament's recent vote in favor of assisted has turned a once unthinkable decision into reality. Concerned citizens see this as the start of a “culture of death,” where the value of life is no longer determined by God, but by the government.

Dr. Gordon Macdonald of Care Not Killing warns that the law will pressure vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, sick, and disabled, to end their lives prematurely. He also warns that the law signals a devaluing of human life.

The British law was patterned after Oregon’s assisted suicide provisions, and Dr. Macdonald points to the state law’s continued expansion as a source of his concern. Oregon’s assisted suicide law began with terminally ill patients but quickly expanded to include individuals with mental health issues and non-terminal conditions. This all but proves that once the line is crossed, there’s no turning back.

Polyamory Acceptance Grows in the US

The rise of polyamory and consensual non-monogamy is another sign of society’s continued moral shift, contributing to the breakdown of the traditional family structure. Polyamory, the practice of having multiple romantic or sexual relationships simultaneously with the consent of everyone involved, was once considered a fringe lifestyle. Now, the concept is becoming increasingly normalized, with significant numbers of LGBTQ+ youth and adults exploring such relationships.

A recent study from the Kinsey Institute claims that approximately 1 in 6 Americans express an interest in engaging in polyamorous relationships and 1 in 9 Americans have already been involved in a polyamorous relationship. The majority who show an interest in polyamory come from the Gen Z LGBTQ+ community.

Polyamorous relationships challenge the very definition of family, with many embracing them as a legitimate form of family structure. However, this redefinition of family stands in direct conflict with the biblical concept of marriage and parenthood, which has been central to societal stability for centuries.

As polyamory becomes more accepted, the destruction of the family unit accelerates. This will only result in fractured relationships, diminished commitment, and the loss of clear moral boundaries in family life.

Pro-Life Voices Silenced by UK Law

In the UK, “safe access zones” have recently been established around abortion clinics, where even silent prayer is banned. Under the Public Order Act 2023, pro-life protests are effectively silenced within 200 meters of a clinic, including any form of prayer.

Christian activist groups rightly decry this as a move that criminalizes peaceful dissent. The law does not just stifle protest—it effectively silences Christian voices, shutting down potentially life-saving conversations about the sanctity of life near abortion clinics.

Adam Connor-Smith, a UK army veteran and father of three, was recently arrested for a silent prayer while standing just inside a safe access zone. Though he disrupted no one, drew no attention to himself, and was silently praying in memory of an unborn child he and his wife aborted long ago, he was charged with breaking the law and protesting.

In a response to the initial ruling, Smith-Connor’s attorney stated, “This is a legal turning point of immense proportions. A man has been convicted today because of the content of his thoughts—his prayers to God—on the public streets of England. We can hardly sink any lower in our neglect of basic fundamental freedoms of free speech and thought.”

The Need for the Gospel in an Age of Moral Decay

This decline of morality in the US and England is part of a larger trend sweeping across the Western World. As Christians, we must recognize that the urgency to spread the gospel has never been greater. The tightening noose against unapproved Christian “thought” is leading us to a day when merely believing in Christ could become an offense, worthy of imprisonment. If we become a small enough minority, we may no longer be tolerated by society.

The church cannot afford to sit idly by while the world embraces destructive ideologies. It is our responsibility to offer the only true remedy to a world lost in moral confusion—the gospel.

Chick tracts offer a simple, yet effective, way to reach the world with the hope of the gospel. It's easy to share them with friends and neighbors or place them in public locations so people can take one when they find it. With these little “paper preachers,” we can all spread the gospel to a world in desperate need of the hope it offers.
